What does "Vancouver" mean??
「バンクーバー」とはどういう意味でしょう？
Actually, Vancouver City gets its name from the British captain George Vancouver who explored from Washington State to British Columbia.
実はバンクーバー市はジョージ・バンクーバーというアメリカのワシントン州からカナダのブリティッシュコロンビア州まで探検したイギリス艦長から名がつけられました。
In the summer of 1792 both the British and the Spanish had plans to explore the West Coast of North America. But Captain George Vancouver got there first by a mere two days. He named the Burrard Inlet after Sir Harry Burrard, his nephew. He didn't know that the area already was named Tsleil-Wautt or ‘People of the Inlet’ by the native inhabitants of the area.
１７９２年の夏、イギリスもスペインも北アメリカの西部を探検する予定でしたが、２日間でバンクーバー艦長の方が早かったらしいです。バラード入り江は先住民族にツレイルワウット(「入り江の民族」)と呼ばれる事も知らず、バンクーバー艦長が自分の甥の名前を取ってバラードという名をつけたそうです。
I wonder what it was like to explore at that time...
その時代の探検者はどのような生活をしていたんでしょう？？
