With a population of 2,100,000, Vancouver is Canada's 3rd largest city. My favourite things about Vancouver are probably all the different people and languages. About 52% of the population does not speak English as their first language.
210万人の人口でカナダ第3位の都市バンクーバー。一番好きなところは民族や言語の多さですね。人口52%くらいは第一言語が英語ではないようです。
Vancouver was first known as Gastown, and later Granville, names that still mark popular areas in the city (namely Granville Street and Granville Island).
バンクーバー市は最初ガスタウンで、その後グランビルと呼び、現在でもバンクーバー市内で人気なところを示す地名です。（ガスタウン、グランビル通り、グランビルアイランド）。
In 1867 sawmills were established which played a leading role in the settlement of Europeans in the area. It wasn't until 1886, when the railroad connecting east and western Canada was completed, that the city was renamed Vancouver.
ヨーロッパ人の入植地は１８６７年にできた製材所を中心とするそうです。町はバンクーバーとして改名されたのは１８８６年東と西カナダを繋ぐ鉄道の終着駅が町できたときからです。
